John Barwick joined Coutts & Co, Bankers, in 1975 and having progressed through the usual channels within this prestigious private bank, he began to focus on Charities and Not for Profit Organisations in the early 1990's, becoming the architect of the Banking, Investment Management and Strategic Philanthropy propositions serving the Charity clients and meeting the giving needs of the Private Clients. John was awarded the MBE in 2008 for services to Charity.
Upon leaving Coutts & Co at the end of 2011, John founded JBCL to serve the Charity and Not for Profit Sector, meeting the challenges that face many voluntary organisations and offering solutions through best practice and unlocking excellence.
In addition to meeting the above demands John also developed a unique style of advising on Trustee and SMT appointments, Board Structures and Governance Fundraising Strategies, Recovery Plans and Facilitating Away Days for Boards and SMT's.
Much of the above was undertaken beyond his responsibilities at Coutts and mostly in his own time, while also meeting quite stretching responsibilities as a Trustee of a number of Charities and supporting many others in an advisory capacity.

John was our bank relationship manager at a time of great organisational change. He provided us with excellent advice going well beyond the banking remit, & worked with us as a partner to deal with our strategic challenges. His service was always exemplary and delivered with tact and good humour.
His move into a consultancy business was a natural next step. It's no surprise that it has been a great success.

I met John at a time of rapid growth at Wooden Spoon. Managing change is never easy but with John as an ally the path was far smoother. His personal support took many forms: the banking advice was a given, his insight into good practice in the charity sector invaluable and his willingness to bring people together for mutual advantage provided great learning opportunities. He got involved too, becoming a senior volunteer at Wooden Spoon helping to raise funds and organise events. Above all, John's friendly demeanour meant that a date in the diary with Mr Barwick was never missed!
